Caffe W

I’d heard whisperings of Caffe W for a while, but found that no one could really tell me much about the place. I even went searching for it once and got sent to someones house thanks to Google Maps (note that no amount of negotiating would convince the home owner to make me a latte). Well thankfully I eventually found it and it’s rather great. Excellent coffee, a really interesting venue and some of the most stylish bathrooms I’ve seen in ages!

Coffee

Cappuccino – $3.75
Caffe W use 49th Parallel beans and I’m happy to say that they most definitely know what they’re doing with them! The latte was silky smooth, if maybe a tiny bit too hot. The espresso to milk ratio was perfect and they festooned the whole thing with some excellent latte art.

Caffe W

If espresso drinks aren’t your thing there are a half dozen different brew methods for filter coffee, from Siphon to Chemex.

Food

Yogurt and Cherry pastry – $2.75
This house made sweet was less yogurt and more of a yogurt custard concoction and let me tell you, it was bloody marvelous. The filling was sweet and slightly sour at the same time, amazingly smooth with a delicious flakiness to the pastry. I’ve not enjoyed a pastry this much in ages.

Staff

As soon as I walked into Caffe W I was greeted with a huge “HELLOOOOOO!” from the barista. She took me through the menu, laughed and joked with me and showed real knowledge of their offerings. It was great to see the other barista just as hyped up and excited about work as her. My TERRIBLE jokes were laughed at, which obviously was an amazing touch!

Venue

Small but very chic, Caffe W has clearly spent a lot of time designing a functional and high class interior. It’s also great to see that they stock brewing equipment and sell coffee by the bag too. There’s plenty of seating including some window seats to watch the world go by.

Location

The location is average – it’s near the corner of Broadway and Alma so there are plenty of buses close by. There’s a lot of paid on street parking but its surprisingly difficult to find an un metered spot around the area, due to permit parking being so ubiquitous.

Bathrooms

Caffe W has some of the most stylish bathrooms we’ve seen in months! Firstly they’re perfectly clean and well appointed, but the addition of interesting dark paint and a big piece of art make them some of the best we’ve ever seen. The art is very, ahem, useful if you need encouragement! Very well done, Caffe W, I wish my loo at home was as classy!

Conclusion

Although it’s in kind of an odd area, it’s a really great addition to the Broadway/Alma scene that includes some classics such as Good Earth Coffee and The Eatery (Caution this site will give you epilepsy). The staff are great, they put up with my stupid jokes, create decent drinks and I think I’m going to honestly have dirty dreams about their pastries.
