Vancouver Coffee Shops Coming in 2020

Before we get into the list of Vancouver coffee shops coming in 2020, I just want to take a second to ask the Vancouver coffee what the hell is going on? There is a RIDICULOUS amount of new shops opening soon and I’m wondering if we didn’t learn from the great summer of 2018. Don’t you people know that I’m busy!? JEEEEZE. I’m spending more time in the car visiting new coffee shops than I can keep up with!

Good problems to have though!

This year is shaping up to be a pretty insane one. There are some SERIOUSLY heavy-hitting coffee shops about to open.

With that in mind, let’s get into the list (in alphabetical order).

Agro Coffee Roasters

Opening: 2020
OK this one isn’t technically a new coffee shop, but Agro are moving! They’ve outgrown their current location and are heading down the road, to the Powell Brewery building. It’s a huge space, with loads of scope for a huge expansion to their roasting operation.

Coho Coffee

OPEN
From the big fat smart brains behind The Brunch Affair and Coho Commissary comes and totally new concept for a coffee shop. It’s a MASSIVE commissary kitchen space, with a slant towards ghost kitchens (that’s a ‘restaurant’ that appears on Uber Eats, Skip the Dishes etc, but doesn’t have a shopfront). But situated in the front of that space is a coffee shop. They’re slinging beans from Elysian, they’ll have espresso and filter coffee and plenty of food options. Look for a Pinkies Out Coffee Club event there sometime this year!

Enroute

OPEN
Part coffee shop, part bike rental place, part clubhouse! This is the brainchild of some really well known faces in the local road biking scene. It’s almost certainly going to have Phil and Sebastian coffee, but only time will tell!

Fior De Latte Cafe

OPEN
FDL Cafe are pretty light on the Instagram content right now but they reached out to me on email to tell me about their coffee shop that’s opening soon in the Hastings/Burnaby area. FiorDiLatte (FDL) Cafe will have coffee from Detour that in house baked goods as well as house-made Gelato.

Foglifter Coffee

Opening: 2020 (aiming for spring)
Foglifter are already a well-established brand over on Vancouver Island, but this will see their first foray into the big city. I’ve not seen any photos yet but it’ll be in a new building Main Street. As such I’m sure we can expect something special.

Harken

Opening: Feb 2020
Harken is one of my most anticipated shop openings of this year. It’s been created by the former owner and coffee genius from Aubade, with the roasting being headed up by Stacey Lynden and some other very prominent names in the coffee community as part of their team.

Kafka’s Gastown

OPEN
HO-LY-CRAP this is an absolute GAME CHANGER of a coffee shop design. Kafka’s are back with their 3rd coffee shop. I’ve been inside and it’s honestly jaw dropping how unique and stylish this place is. It’s bright and colourful, it’s got an almost 50’s art deco vibe to it and the booth seating is like nothing I’ve ever seen in any coffee shop before. Honestly, if this place doesn’t win some sort of design award I’ll be really surprised.

Nemesis Great Northern Way (Emily Carr)

Opening 2020
One of the coffee shops I’m most keen to see the inside of, mostly because it aint got any walls. In typical Nemesis style, it’s in a very unique building. Well I suppose you can call it a building, it’s more like a flower-building-greenhouse-thing. Loads of glass, a really interesting shape and they even have plans to add a roastery to this place.

Palate Kitchen by Pallet Coffee Roasters

OPEN
Pallet are opening their THIRD venue in the last 12 months. And let me tell you – this place is jaw-dropping. It’s a different take on their usual style with a normal style Pallet coffee shop in the front of the building but a cavernous and sprawling brunch/food space for an experience much closer to a fancy restaurant, only without the insane price tag and snooty clientele. This is a fancy coffee experience made for anyone, not just the snobs!

Cafe Portrait

OPEN
A guy came up to me at an Espressotec event recently and claimed he was going to open a coffee shop. This happens a lot to me, then usually a year later I hear from that person again. NOPE, not in this case! They went from concept to opening a coffee shop on Denman and Davie (ish) area in about 3 months! Incredible! I don’t know much about the place yet, other than they serve Pallet Coffee and seem to like picture frames!

Prado Tsawwassen

Opening: Feb 2020
This is all pretty tightly under wraps at the moment, but I can tell you that it’s going to be close to the beach near Point Roberts and it’s going to have the usual Prado community, coffee and food.

Small Victory (Brentwood)

Opening 2020
I don’t know too much about this place other than it’s in the new Brentwood Mall in Burnaby. I suspect we’ll get another stunning venue with incredible coffee and food.

TurF

OPEN
After the success of their venue on 4th Ave, the TurF team are taking their fitness studio/cafe concept to a downtown location. It’s in a quieter area of Coal Harbour, but they’re no doubt going to be mobbed by the beautiful people of the West End!

United Strangers Coffee

Opening: 2020
Not much known about this one either. It’s in North Vancouver, in an old convenience store and they’ve teased potentially using Pallet coffee. Time will tell!

Winston

OPEN
Winston is from the creators of Koffie, which is by far my favourite DT Business District coffee shop in Vancouver. I’ve not been into the shop yet but I do know that it’s going to be in Lower Lonsdale, it’s very food focused but they are going to have an amazing coffee program to back that up.

Honourary Mention

I’m leaving these out of the Vancouver Coffee Shops Coming in 2020 list because they’re not accessible by everyone.

YVR Airport recently announced that they’re going to have a presence from 49th Parallel (UPDATE: I’ve heard this is not true so take with a handful of salt) and Purebread. This is welcome news to pretty much anyone with tastebuds, as the best they’ve had until now is $tarbucks!
